How Much Caffeine Is in Vietnamese Coffee?
Nobody has published a measurement of a phin brew specifically. What follows is arithmetic from sourced numbers, with every assumption named, so you can adjust it.

The short answer
ESTIMATE: a standard 20 g phin of Vietnamese robusta contains roughly 350–450 mg of caffeine — around two to four times a typical 250 ml cup of filter coffee, and comparable to two or three double espressos. This is calculated from published caffeine content by dry weight, not measured from a phin brew, and the range is wide because roast, variety and extraction all move it.

We could not find a published measurement of caffeine in a phin brew. So here is the calculation instead, with each input sourced or labelled as an assumption. Change any input and you can recalculate it yourself.

The assumption doing the most work is extraction efficiency. If a phin extracts only 60% of available caffeine, the figure drops to roughly 240–320 mg. If it reaches 95%, it rises toward 510 mg. We have flagged this as unverified rather than pretending to a precision we do not have.

Why it is so much higher
Two things compound, and it is worth separating them because people usually credit only the first.
The species. Robusta carries roughly twice arabica’s caffeine — 1.5–2.7% by dry weight against 0.8–1.6%. Caffeine is part of the plant’s chemical defence against insects, which is the same reason robusta needs less spraying in the field.
The ratio. A phin brews at about 1:5. A pour-over brews at about 1:16. That is three times more coffee per serving before you account for the species at all.
Multiply the two and you get a drink with several times the caffeine of the coffee most readers are used to, in a smaller glass.

That fourth row catches people out. A larger glass of cà phê sữa đá is not a weaker drink; it is the same amount of caffeine in more liquid.
What we are not saying
We are not giving medical advice, and we have not measured anything.
What we are saying is that if you are used to two cups of filter coffee a day and you switch to two glasses of phin-brewed robusta, you have probably tripled your caffeine intake without noticing the change in habit. That is worth knowing before you find out the hard way at eleven at night.
The EFSA guideline for most healthy adults is around 400 mg a day and around 200 mg in a single dose. On the estimate above, one Vietnamese coffee can reach both.
Questions people ask
- Is Vietnamese coffee higher in caffeine than normal coffee?
- Substantially, for two reasons that compound. Robusta carries roughly twice the caffeine of arabica by weight, and a phin is brewed at about 1:5 rather than 1:16, so there is far more coffee per serving. A single glass can carry more caffeine than three cups of filter coffee.
- How much caffeine is in a cà phê sữa đá?
- ESTIMATE: roughly 350–450 mg for a standard 20 g dose of dark-roast robusta. Condensed milk and ice change the volume and the taste but not the caffeine. This is calculated rather than measured — see the arithmetic on this page.
- Does dark roasting reduce caffeine?
- Barely. Caffeine is thermally stable at roasting temperatures. What changes is mass: beans lose water and some solids during roasting, so caffeine as a percentage of the roasted bean is marginally higher than of the green bean. Measuring by weight rather than by scoop matters more than roast level.
- Is that too much caffeine?
- The EFSA and several other authorities put a single-dose guideline at around 200 mg and a daily guideline at around 400 mg for most healthy adults. On the estimate here, one Vietnamese coffee can reach or exceed the daily figure. That is worth knowing, particularly if you are used to drinking two or three coffees a day.
